Introduction

Founded in 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is one of the most prestigious art competitions for young artists and writers in the United States. This annual competition attracts talented students from around the world, offering them a platform to share their creative work.

Winners not only receive recognition but also have a chance to win scholarships. The judging criteria emphasize originality, skill, and personal expression, encouraging students to explore their unique creativity. With a highly selective acceptance rate of around 6%, winning this competition is an impressive accomplishment.

Competition Categories

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is divided into two main categories: Visual Arts and Writing.

Visual Arts: This includes drawing, sculpture, ceramics, fashion design, illustration, photography, printmaking, and digital art. Students can showcase their skills in a wide range of artistic styles and mediums.

Writing: The writing categories include poetry, short stories, personal essays, journalism, scripts, critical essays, and satire. This allows students to express themselves through storytelling, critical thinking, and creative writing.

By providing these diverse options, the competition encourages young artists and writers to express their talents in ways that best suit their interests.

Entry Requirements

To enter, students need to submit their original works. For visual arts, they must upload high-quality images of their artwork, while writers should submit their work in the specified word limits for each genre. The competition emphasizes the importance of originality and self-expression, making it an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their individual voices.

Award Levels and Recognition

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards offers various award levels to recognize outstanding work:

Gold Key: The highest honor at the regional level, which qualifies students for national judging.

Silver Key: Recognizes exceptional work at the regional level.

Honorable Mention: Acknowledges notable talent.

National Scholarships: Awarded to national-level winners, offering valuable financial support for their education.

These awards not only give students recognition but also add to their college applications, especially for those aiming to attend top art schools.

Who Can Participate?

The competition is open to students in grades 7-12. Applications open every year in September and close by December or January. Regional winners are announced between January and March, and national awards are announced in May. This schedule gives students plenty of time to plan, create, and submit their best work.

Why Participate in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards?

Participating in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards allows students to gain recognition, receive feedback, and explore their creativity in a structured setting. This experience can help them grow as artists and writers, developing skills and confidence. Winning an award or even receiving an honorable mention can be an excellent addition to a student’s college application, especially for those considering art or writing programs.
